Christmas brings out the classics: music, traditions, decorations … and movies. And they in turn bring out the themes of life during the holidays, whether they’re idyllic, fantastical, or the reason for the season. This Advent we’ll look at the Hope, Peace, and Joy we receive through the gift of Jesus’ First Coming (and His Second!) — all through the lens of the Christmas classics How the Grinch S...

We all live with some degree of anxiety. Unfortunately, there’s been a concerning trend over the last several years where many people are experiencing a level that affects even their normal day-to-day activities. It’s in Philippians 4:6 that the apostle Paul tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything.” But with so much to alarm us these days, is this admonition to Christ-followers even possible?...

Faith is incredibly powerful. We’re wired for it—no-one can independently verify everything that exists. We need it—without faith we lose what it means to be human. However it is often limited to being defined by just belief. In his letter to fellow believers, James reminds us that faith isn’t just an intellectual work—faith produces practical application and action in our lives that provides evid...

Waiting for suffering to end just seems to prolong our pain and lead to bitterness, envy, or despair. Hope can see elusive. This week, we discuss how God works in the midst of our waiting, and how we can find hope in the promise and purpose that God has for us.

Monday is often the least favorite day of the week for one simple reason: work. After all, that feeling of dread hits us Sunday afternoon when we realize the weekend is nearly over. And then the workday grind will be on again. It can be hard to get past the feeling that we must work to make a living. But what if there was a different way to look at Mondays? There is — and it all begins with how Go...

This Sunday is Compassion Sunday at Velocity — a special day for churches across America to share God’s message about caring for refugees and those otherwise in need. What’s more, it’s an occasion for churches in America join in solidarity with churches in the developing world. And that’s more relevant than ever considering the current crisis in Afghanistan and the ongoing threat to our fellow Chr...

The opener for Jesus’ most famous teaching — the Sermon on the Mount — is in Matthew 5:3-12. It contains eight beatitudes, which are statements of characteristics that are indicative of those living blessed lives. It’s within each description that we find who belief in God enables us to be. And it’s in this becoming that we are blessed. That’s what we’re exploring at Velocity in our sermon series...

Our guest speaker this Sunday morning is Tim Cole, the Executive Director of Waypoint Church Partners -- an organization that plants churches around the Mid-Atlantic, and assists and trains church leaders for a wide variety of needs. And if he looks somewhat familiar, Tim was also Velocity's original pastor!

Anyone who has ever struggled with the pitfalls of life knows what it’s like to wrestle with God. It’s those exhausting times when we deal with people, circumstances and faith — and especially our hearts — that require intense effort that connects deep within our souls. Thankfully, we’re not alone in these personal battles. And such adversity is nothing new in the human experience. In fact, the Bi...
