My favourite trousers and how I have sorely abused them 05.07.2023

Send us Fan Mail I have a pair of favoured trousers. They are brown corduroy, accidentally matching my favourite slip-on brown shoes.  I vaguely remember buying the trousers some years ago, and then having the length of their legs reduced to meet my personal requirements.  I noted recently that the cords they have become increasingly faded around the knees and seams.  They have received brutal tre...

Wimbledonitis. 03.07.2023

Send us Fan Mail Wimbldonitis is a temporary  condition afflicting people as we approach the British Grand Slam of tennis, held at its fabled home of Wimbledon. Curiously, the illness does not affect ordinary club players throughout the county. The majority of these are completely immune, continuing with their regular social games, perhaps watching the highlight programmes on the BBC  in the eveni...

Whatever happened to the Manchester Business School? 29.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Part 1. A nostalgic train journey I leave my retirement home in Woodford Garden village and take a rumbling suburban train into the metropolis of Manchester. Twenty Tweets of the Month 26.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail June 2023 A trend I’ve noticed in twitter, this month. The has been a dramatic rise on the use of threads, multiple tweets creatively escaping the word limit. How to improve your chess by benchmarking 21.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Improving your chess by benchmarking. These training instructions were provided for members of East Cheshire Chess Club. I hope they will also be of use to anyone interested in leaning about chess. This year we have been offering training sessions to beginners and club members interested in improving their skills. We have settled for a mix of short lecture sessions on club nights,...

Thought for the day. Conspiracy theories 18.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Thursday 15 June 2023 The political news of the day is the report of the enquiry finding the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson guilty of misleading Parliament, misleading the enquiry, and compounding his errors by vigorous denial of the legitimacy of the enquiry. In earlier podcasts, I noted the difficulties that politicians have in changing their minds.  Maybe they persist irra...

A day is a long time in politics. The resignation of Boris Johnson 12.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail A day is a long time in politics. The resignation of Boris Johnson Friday 9 June 2023 There is an often repeated saying that a week is a long time in politics. Today, it seems as if the saying has to be speeded up to meet the pace of everyday life.  I have just posted my weekly newsletter which began: As I write, news is emerging of charges against former President Trump and forme...

Prayer for tourists 10.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail As I removed the washing from the tumbler drier, a faded dishcloth was retrieved. I read what was written with increasing admiration. The dishcloth had been made in Ireland.  It seems to have been acquired long ago. It captured a gently humorous tourist prayer. I have spared you the Irish accept ... How (not) to publicise your chess club. Confessions of a publicity officer. 07.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Gentlemen. I note there are no ladies present. One immediate example of how my efforts as your publicity officer have failed miserably in at least in that one aspect. This is the seventh year in which I have held the honorary post of publicity officer of our Chess club. It is the first year I have been asked to provide a report of progress at our AGM. That is possibly because I wo...

Twitter wit and wisdom June 2023 07.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Some familiar tweeters in these recent gems from Twitter. @deelomas Thought for the day: What if that spider you just killed in your house had spent his entire life thinking that you were his roommate?  Ever think about that?  No. You only think about yourself… @gerriisalsoGigi There’s a really good yoga trick for headaches, it’s all about breathing in through one nostril then the...

How to play backgammon. Lesson 2 04.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Setting up the board with the chequers in their correct position. Backgammon is played in competition between two people (other versions are possible, but let’s keep it simple. Also keeping it simple, I’m calling one ‘white’ and another ‘black’). I’m going to use the terms ‘bits’ as an alternative to chequers and meaning the same thing. I’m using the principle of symmetry to simpl...

Learning to play backgammon LESSON 1 02.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Learning to play backgammon Lesson one Learning about the bits and the board. Take the bits out of the box You will find you have fifteen white bits and fifteen black bits. Or chequers as they are called. Look at the board. Notice it before you put any pieces, aka as chequers, on it. It looks complicated, but it isn’t once you see its basic pattern. Lay it open. It’s actually two...

Strong leadership revisited 02.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail In a recent article in the CNN newsletter,  Stephen Collinson, Caitlin Hi and Shelby Rose provide excellent insights into effective political processes.  President Biden and Speaker McCathy seem to have avoided what was becoming a crisis which would have plunged the greatest economy in the world into fiscal melt-down. Experienced commentators have noted this as the latest of regul...

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!! Yeah, yeah, whatever 01.06.2023

Send us Fan Mail Wednesday 31 May 2023   The headlines today. The Daily Mail  ‘A.I. ‘Could wipe out humanity’. Threat as bad as nuclear war’ MUST be tackled, say tech bosses. The Independent AI creators fear the extinction of humanity. The Times AI pioneers fear extinction The source of these headlines is a newly formed pressure group, The Centre for AI Safety, whose authority is underwritten by t...

The Desperadoes of Didsbury 29.05.2023

Send us Fan Mail   Monday, 29 May I can hardly behave what I have just heard. It is late morning of the fourth of our recent Great British Bank Holidays, part of a scheme by the Govt intended to distract the voters from unpopular economic news.  I am approaching a little group of friends outside a local deli in Didsbury, across the road from the famous northern tennis club. Even from a distance, i...

Obituary: Martin Amis ‘The Mick Jagger of Literature’ 28.05.2023

Send us Fan Mail The writer Martin Amis, (1949-2023), died this week after a life in the literary spotlight.  His appointment as a professor at Manchester University, in the late 2000s resulted in a storm in a literary tea-cup. The academic spat was stirred up with some help from the Guardian. However, in that paper’s obituary this week, it is glossed over, within a brief comment about ‘his stints...

Everyday Creativity and Creative Leadership 25.05.2023

Send us Fan Mail In the memorial event in his honour at the Edward de Bono Institute of the University of Malta, in May 2023, I offer a personal perspective, reflecting on creativity drawing on my own work, and Edward’s direct and indirect impact on it. First, everyday creativity. My work on Everyday Creativity was influenced by the French philosopher Henri Bergson, and later by the  american educ...

To tell or not to tell? That is the question. 21.05.2023

Send us Fan Mail How to tell a mother that her son is about to be decapitated?  Is this a blurb for a gory thriller? No. It’s about real-life situation involving a severed head witnessed by an unsuspecting mother.  Let me explain. I’m afraid this involves a spoiler alert if you want at sometime in the  future  to watch a performance of Shakespeare’s play Cymbeline.  My story involves the productio...

How to write a great book blurb 19.05.2023

Send us Fan Mail Book marketing remains a dark art. Particularly for debut authors. There is no simple formula, and I won’t be supplying one here. What I want to share is the cover blurb for the book, ‘I Will Find You’ by best-selling author Harlen Coben, and discuss some of ways it has been crafted to achieve maximum impact.  I came across the book as I browsed the new thrillers section of my loc...
