The Silver Linings Playlist

This week on the program we’re diving back into the world of multiverses to discuss a truly bizarre product of the aughts. Two Jet Lis, nü-metal needle drops, and a pre-bald Jason Statham all get mushed into a blender and out comes 2001’s The One . This obvious rip-off of so many other films that came before it ( The Matrix as its main component) doesn’t offer much other than some incredibly laugh...

Bonjour! A lot has been said already about the absolute trainwreck that is Madame Web – but we still have our fair share to offer as well. Lazy performances, confusing writing, and baffling ADR are just a few aspects worth discussing in yet another god-awful entry into the now defunct Sony-verse. So join us on our trip to the Amazon with our moms as we research spiders right before we all die as w...

We’re not quite done discussing the divide between liberals and conservatives this season, but this movie seems to be as 2020’s The Hunt has virtually nothing to say on the topic (other than having its characters shout buzzwords.) A swing and a miss from this Leftovers duo, Zobel and Lindelof managed to make a movie that’s all hype with no substance. But we still have a lot to say about this one,...

It’s the 13th of the month, and Longlegs only needs one more murder to complete his task! Will he succeed? Will Lee Harker stop him in time? Or will the devil claim another soul? Tune in this week to find out as we talk about one of the best horror films of 2024. Plus, we’ll discuss the annoyance of waiters singing happy birthday at restaurants, hotel room cuck chairs, and the most important quest...

It’s maybe our least favorite day of the year as we’re reminded of a truly embarrassing stain on our nation’s history, so it seems only appropriate to discuss a movie that focuses on similar themes in a microcosm. 2022’s Soft & Quiet had a release that was, unfortunately, true to its name. With that being said, we’re hoping this episode will bring more people around to this fantastic (albeit i...

To cap off a pretty violent year, we’re talking about a pretty violent film with the mother of all death game movies – 2000’s Battle Royale . It was The Hunger Games before The Hunger Games that cemented itself as one of the most influential films of the aughts and beyond. If you still haven’t seen it, make that correction then change into your school uniform and grab your randomly assigned weapon...

Ho, ho, fuck: it’s our Christmas episode of 2024, and with how dour things seemed to be this year, we could think of no better movie to discuss this week than the OG Black Christmas from Bob Clark. This small hazy and eerie horror flick bridged the gap from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho to John Carpenter’s Halloween that solidified the slasher genre for decades to come – and it’s still just as good 50...

If Joker: Folie à Deux is anything, it’s unconventional; jokes on you if you were expecting otherwise from a sequel to its billion-dollar grossing predecessor . This time, Arthur Fleck has gone from performing stand-up comedy (badly) to performing showtunes (badly). But what may surprise you is that we didn’t hate this one. So put on your dancing shoes and light up as Dustin (the Mayor of Movies),...

A flood is coming, and not just the water swallowing the Earth to kill everyone and everything – it’s a brand-new season of our show! We’re back from our much-needed break, and we’re kicking things off with the last of Darren Aronofsky’s theatrically released feature films we haven’t discussed yet. It’s the one you definitely forgot about: 2014’s Noah . What a weird, weird movie. And what’s even w...

Just poking our heads back in for a moment during our summer break to let you know about some big things happening over at TSLP headquarters. The first is that Nathan and Dustin are starting a brand-new limited series podcast about the 1995 cult classic Showgirls from Paul Verhoeven where they’ll be discussing everything from Nomi’s bizarre diet to the insane sequel (yes, there’s a sequel) and eve...

As we close up shop on Season 7, we could not leave without talking about arguably the biggest movie of 2023. With 7 Oscars and an unfathomable amount of other prestigious awards, Oppenheimer is a once in a lifetime opportunity (or Oppentunity, if you will.) Christopher Nolan has finally unleashed Cillian Murphy to his fullest potentials, and Nolan's directing capabilities and Murphy's a...

Before Minus One got all the love and admiration it so rightfully deserved, there was another Godzilla movie not so long ago that really stomped its way into the hearts of millions. So after 180 episodes of the show, we're finally discussing the one, the only, the King of the Monsters (but not that movie.) We're of course talking about Godzilla, but not just any Godzilla movie; it's...

Like, we're totally diving into the radical '80s this week as we're talking all about the dark comedy slasher Totally Killer from last year. This one's, like, totally got it all: tubular time travel, snappy dialogue, and a rockin' soundtrack. So grab your Aqua Net and some bottom shelf booze as we kick off Women's History Month talking about how these women kick ass....

We couldn't let Black History Month end without discussing not only one of the best movies about Black history, but one of the best movies of the decade. While 2021's Judas and the Black Messiah indeed got the praise it was due at the Academy Awards, we still feel as if it hasn't gotten the admiration it deserves. So put on your shades and adjust that beret as we talk about the incr...

Well, it's been two weeks since we've discussed a video game movie, so time to do another one. But this time, there's a twist: if you die in the game, you die for real! That's right, of course we're talking about none other than 2006's Stay Alive , and boy, would we like to find whoever made it and hurt them (not really – that’s just a quote from the movie.) Technical...

This episode is going to drive people absolutely mad! It's the week of Valentine's Day, and you know what that means: it's time to celebrate John Carpenter's utterly bleak view of the world. Or at least that's how we celebrate it around here. We're talking 1994's In the Mouth of Madness this week, and prepare yourself now because this one gets dark. Can we find a...

We're testing your might and maybe even your patience this week as we're back discussing video game adaptations (and yet another one from Paul W. S. Anderson) with the original Mortal Kombat from 1995. A film with some pretty great locations, art direction, and set dressing, which is honestly amazing considering all the scenery chewing going on in this movie. But a myriad of strange deci...

2022 was a rough year in the entertainment industry. First there was The Slap, and then there was The Spit – or the alleged spit, we should say. Has there been a wilder ride (one could even say an Olivia Wilde-r ride) than the production and press tour for Don't Worry Darling ? A very messy release for a very messy movie. But is it as bad as everyone made it out to be? Straighten up that bow...

Now that we've grieved the Fireflies last week, let's get back to having fun on the show. This time we're using 2001's From Hell as a jumping off point to talk about a lot of things: Johnny Depp sleepwalking through this film, Robbie Coltrane giving a Shakespearian performance in a completely different movie, and so, so much more. This one's yet another adaptation of Alan...

Oh yeah, we're doing it. And honestly, it took way too long for us to finally discuss this one, let alone anime in general. Grave of the Fireflies was only the third Studio Ghibli movie when it debuted in 1988, but it was just as powerful and evocative then as it still is today. So much so that a lot of people can only bring themselves to watch it once - but not us. A beautiful tragedy envelo...

Like many others, Gareth Evans's The Raid was a gateway for us into the incredible world of Indonesian action films. For what used to feel like a bygone era, these movies simultaneously conjure up nostalgia for '70s and '80s kung fu films while also transcending the genre entirely, and Timo Tjahjanto's The Night Comes for Us pushes what we thought those movies could be to the a...

We decided we needed to kick off 2024 with a bit of sadness. That's right, this New Year's Day we're talking about the absolutely stellar Triangle of Sadness from 2022. Incredible performances, precision editing, and top notch directing are just a few of the factors that make this scathing satire of gender roles and social classes a well deserved Palme d'Or winner. So grab your...

It's a Christmas miracle! We're bringing you a very special holiday themed episode about the much darker version of Home Alone . That's right, it's the cult classic Deadly Games (aka Dial Code Santa Claus aka Game Over aka Hide and Freak aka 3615 code Père Noël aka Las fantasías del pequeño Rambo) from 1989 - and yes, those are all real alternate titles. What if the Wet Bandits...

Are you behind on your podcasts? Good! Press play on our episode and start listening. Do you need a good laugh as well as some great insight via a film review? Good! Press play on our episode and start listening. Does your girlfriend think you’re a fucking loser? Well, we can't help with that one, but if she likes the amazing The Wolf of Wall Street , we're just the place to be. It'...

If you thought one Ezra Miller on screen was annoying, wait until you see two of them. That's right, this week we're talking about the absolute abomination that is this year's The Flash . A fitting end to the DCEU, this movie is stunning - and not in a good way. Horrible CGI, completely dropped plot threads, and jokes that would have killed twenty years ago plague the entirety of th...
