The Lost Drive-In

This is an episode typically reserved for our incredibly generous members, but today you get to hear it for free! It's a dive into what makes a character interesting. Storytelling requires characters, and sometimes those characters are deep and well-developed, and sometimes they are more archtypical, but does that make them bad characters? It's the first John Wayne movie ever covered by LSG Media and we picked a fantastic one! Wayne is great, and the Searchers is an epic tale inspired by the true story of the abduction of Cynthia Ann Parker by the Comanche in Texas. Congrats to Guy H on his big Member Movie Giveaway victory - and what a pick - Starship Troopers is an excellent movie that displays the full satirical power of Paul Verhoeven as he exploits the jingoistic ideas of the west in this full-throated, hilarious, and underrated sci-fi gem. Escape From New York is unironically great. A terrific look at a not-so-distant dystopian New York City with Russell playing the perfect anti-hero. Escape From L.A. is ironically excellent. Of course, it's not really good as films go, but it will certainly entertain you with how dumb it is. Don't miss it - and do not miss this episode. If there is one institution that will save humanity it's the US postal service. An institution known for it's charisma, effeciency, and alacrity. An institition that puts it's customer first, and reminds us all why we pay taxes to the federal government. The USPS, basions of liberty. It's the dark future and data is everything, but you can't trust the wireless technology to keep your info safe. The solution, mnemonic couriers who are wet-wired to store information in their heads via implant. Their job - to physically transport the data between clients while dodging all manner of bad guy. It's cyberpunk, it's cool, and it's entirely watchable despite being highly silly. Links S...

This is the first round of a multiple round draft pitting Maaja, Dean, and Scott against each other in a sci-fi movie draft where we build a top 5 team and pit them against each other in a vote. It's a great catch-all discussion for all things sci-fi. Ghost in the Shell is one of the best anime pictures ever put to screen and an excellent foray into the cyberpunk genre. The premise grapples with big ideas as only science fiction can, and the animnation, despite being 30+ years old, is still top-knotch. Nobody remembers this mid-90s look at the start of the next millennium, but Strange Days features a quintessential 90s line-up featuring Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Michael Wincott, Ralph Fieness, and Private Pyle as a racist police man. Imagine being able to record your emotional experiences and then pass them along to someone else who can feel what you felt during those moments...

Kevin G. won the Member Movie Giveaway and he selected The Crow from 1994. Nothing gets the crew more boned up than diving into their little black hearts and nerding out on the delicious aesthetic, amazing soundtrack, and beautiful revenge in this oh so goth love tale of tragic revenge. RIP to the gone-too-early, Brandon Lee. Links Support Our Work - https://lsgmedia.net/join Discord - https://dis...

This podcast is coming from inside your house! Black Christmas predates Carpenter's Halloween by 4 years and features the killer's POV as he stalks sororiety school girls. When he is not stalking he is making grotesque prank phone calls with the intent to terrorize his soon-to-be victims. This is a must watch! Tim Burton leans into the aesthetic of Gotham with a heavy hand and it lends itself to comic book storytelling. Danny Elfman turns in a score with perhaps one of the best themes of his career, and Michelle Pfeiffer plays an unforgetable Catwoman. It's an excellent Rogue's Gallery of villains with Walken being at his most Walken. Although considered inferior to the original picture, we are here to...

Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and Winona Ryder in their prime goth phase. This picture is an excellent look on what it's like to be an outsider trying to fit in with a "normal" family and all of the things that can go both right and wrong. There is a beautiful score provided by Danny Elfman, and some excellent performances by the supporting cast. It's a dark fairy tale classic. Links Support Our Work -...

When science becomes an obsession you will end up slowly turning into a flying insect with a strong libido and a perpensity to vomit on your food. This movie is not one of Carpenter's best. You can skip it entirely - or hang out with us as we watch it and try our best to understand what exactly is going on. Gary Oldman needs a bite to drink to help himself wash down all the scenery that he's chewing on. Keaunu is servicable, but not his best, and Winona is great. Hopkins is always good, but the biggest success of this flim is the production value, directing, cinematography, and the score. It paints an incredible picture of a dark fantasy that truly feels supernatural. Special shout-out to the cosutme...

Sometimes you need a man in dickies to walk around in a William Shatner mask and to carve up teen girls and boys who are just innocently trying to smoke weed and bang. When you hear the piano cue you better watch out - Michael Myers is just around the corner. This is a crucial episode of the LDI podcast. In it you will learn that Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal are the cause of all of the woes of the fundamentalists who were indeed invoking a moral panic. Listen as we discuss our own experience living through the great Satanic Panic. How much truth was there in all of the hoopla? The reality: not much at all. Links Support Our Work - https://lsg...

Freddy Krueger is an interesting horror icon. He is funny. Seems to delight in his killing, unlike Michael Myers, and he has a very unique look; mostly burned, neat hat, dirty sweater, and of course - a glove made of knives. The reality is that he could never kill as many children as the government (take your pick) could, but he will certainly try, and he will do it through your dreams! Links Supp...

Congrats to Rob Z for winning the Member Movie Giveaway — this episode was requested by him! Rowdy Roddy Piper in a lead role could get some viewers to just assume that you were about to watch schlocky sci-fi nonsense ala Hell Comes to Frogtown, but with Carpenter at the helm the material is elevated in a unique way. They Live is a wonderful critique of the excess of the 80s couched in a wonderfully delightful science fiction aesthetic. Counterculture is on display and we truly get to see...

Barbarian is a tale of two films that blend together wonderfully and leave the viewer wondering what the hell is going on. That said - the eternal question must be asked...
