The ApeCast

Third time's a charm for recurring guest and composer of our theme song Amos Dunn, as he joins us to talk about the horse race in The Horse Race.  You're not gonna want to miss the fun as the gang talks about one of the nuttiest episodes of the show so far.  The marvelous douchebaggery of General Urko!  Captain America and other nations' equivalents!  The proper pronunciation of lasso!  Gorilla Go...

Jack and Geoff are lured in by The Deception, the latest episode in their coverage of the Apes TV Series! And deceptions abound as detectives-for-a-day Alan, Pete and Galen go undercover to solve a murder, all while tangling with the ApeKK (aka the KKKape)! Meanwhile, Jack and Geoff touch upon the series' preponderance of country apes, explore some forgotten corners of the 80's Saturday morning ca...

Jack and Geoff continue their implacable coverage of the Apes' TV series with The Surgeon! And it's diagnosis: delightful, as the two revel in the first episode thus far to focus on Galen, their favorite renegade ape! They also touch upon the evolution of the ape actors' performances, the return of Pete's classic fight moves, and the sheer awesomeness of apes in surgical scrubs.

Jack and Geoff are joined by returning guest Andrew Saunders to talk The Mighty Peking Man! And to our hosts' delight, this 1977 Hong Kong knockoff of King Kong '76 is much more than the sharply-ripened slice of cheese it appears to be. If you're a fan of giant apes, wild jungle girls, and/or swinging 70's Hong Kong, you'll want to check out The Mighty Peking Man by any means you can!

Fishing for a good Apes podcast?  Take the plunge, and sea what The ApeCast has to offer you as we dive into Tomorrow's Tide!  Returning guest Sam Stovold makes a splash as together we get to the bottom of what's so fishy about the fisherman slave village our heroes find themselves in.  Look out for a few red herrings though, as we veer to starboard to talk about Lawgiver tiki cups, Rocky, LOST, 1...

Jack and Geoff travel to post-apocalyptic Oakland to talk The Legacy, episode 5 of the POTA TV series! And amidst their exploration, the two discuss holo-men from the future, the acting chops of a young Jackie "Early" Haley, and the triumphant return of Counselor Zaius! NOTE: due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the latter part of this episode was lost in the ether. So enjoy this bite-sized e...

APE DAY in June falls on the twenty-ape-th, so that means it's time for more KONG!  This time our resident Kong-spert Erin joins us once again to delve into the dark, moody, allegedly campy world of 1976's King Kong, the father of the modern gritty reboot.  Is Jessica Lange high?  Will Charles Grodin's corrupt oil magnate validate Jeff Bridge's pretentious paleo-primatologist's cynical contempt? ...

Jack and Geoff are joined by returning guest (and Marvel Star Wars Explorer) Brian Rudloff to discuss the 4th episode of the POTA TV series, The Good Seeds. And it's a bumper crop of lively discussion as the three ponder Pete's questionable wisecracking, the hilarity of Apes in humanface, and the bizarre, superstitious world of agriculture on the Planet of the Apes!

In a similar situation to the one Pete and General Urko face, Jack and Geoff find themselves trapped in Jack's dingy apartment and have to work together to get through this podcast about the third episode of the 1970s Planet of the Apes television serie

It's the 28th of the month, which means it's time for another special APE-isode! This time, Jack and Geoff are joined by returning guest (and ApeCast theme song composer) Amos Dunn for a discussion of recently-released 80's arcade game adaptation RAMPAGE. They talk about their history with the source material, the bottomless fount of charisma that is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and revel in the mov...

Jack and Geoff are joined by returning guests Kevin Young and Kregg Castillo for a look at episode 2 of the POTA TV series: The Gladiators! And it's nothing less than a conversational battle royale as the four marvel at Pete Burke's sweet pro-wrestling moves, discuss the awesomeness of the humans-hunting-humans film genre, and check out another classic '74 cut from Geoff's Geoukebox!

May the Fourth be with you! Even though this is The ApeCast, we love Star Wars too much not to talk about it, so Geoff and Jack have brought back Duncan Hughes to get wasted and talk about The Last Jedi! Squadron up!

In this episode of the ApeCast, a new epoch (or APEoch) begins! Jack and Geoff start their coverage of the 1974 Planet of the Apes TV series with an examination of the pilot "Escape From Tomorrow." Amidst their discussion, the boys reaffirm their affection for Roddy McDowall, lay the groundwork for a Flinstones reboot, and engage in a little light-hearted ribbing of Japan's culinary tendencies. Ap...

After gushing over Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes last week, Geoff and Jack's dreams come true, as the author of the book, Andrew E.C. Gaska, sits down to talk with them about it and answer some of their questions.  He gives us an inside look at the process behind how the project came together, how he managed to get the fantastic collection of artwork seen in the book, and how it ended up ge...

Gaska's beautifully-illustrated novel, our intrepid hosts touch upon their fondness for sympathetic gorillas, surprisingly precise statistical probabilities across science fiction, fascinating Apes world-building, and so much more! NOTE: Due t...

This APE-ril, Siblings Day happens to fall very close to the Ape-th of the month, so Jack and Geoff celebrate the only way they know how: by kicking back, watching the classic 1962 kaiju flick King Kong vs. Godzilla, and calling in their siblings, returning champions Sam Stovold and Kong-spert Erin Clarke, to help!  In this fun Kong-sized bonus extravaganza, they'll delve into such fascinating top...

This time on The ApeCast, Geoff and Jack are looking at another crazy comics crossover, this time between Planet of the Apes and Green Lantern!  As your hosts are both complete Green Lantern noobs, they had to call in some help, and that's where Green Lantern expert and  super fan Jason Butze steps in.  He's here to help us make sense of this surprisingly complex story  that delves deep into Lante...

In a very special episode, cohost Jack's other project, Star Trek: DS9 Podcast Reopening the Wormhole joins forces with The ApeCast (a podcast crossover!) to talk about a nutty comics crossover!  That's right, two dream teams come together, as we finally delve into our hitherto endlessly  teased episode about Star Trek / Planet of the Apes: The Primate Directive!  In more ways than one, two great...

It's the 8th (or APEth) of the month, and you know what that means: time for another special APEisode of the ApeCast! This time on The ApeCast, Geoff and Jack take a look at the excellent short story collection Tales From the Forbidden Zone, specifically four of the stories: Dan Abnett's Unfired, a tale of a mutant pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Nancy Collins' More Than Human, Less Than Ape, about a young Cornelius' shocking discovery in a far-off place, Bob Mayer's The Pacing Place, an alternate sequel to the firs...

It's the Ape-th of February, and that means it's the first of our monthly bonus forays into the world of Ape cinema outside of Planet of the Apes!  And what better place to start than with the most famous ape of them all?  That's right, we're kicking it off with 1933's King Kong, and here to join us is Geoff's sister and classic cinema fan Erin Clarke!  The three of them have a grand ol' time exam...

Jack and Geoff take a moment to reflect on where they've been so far and where they're going by watching the 1998 television documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes.  Hosted by Roddy McDowall, Behind is a treasure trove of behind the scenes footage, interviews, anecdotes and information about the history and production of the original Apes saga, from page to screen.  Jack forgot just how cool it...

For the final movie in the original film series, Geoff escapes to his native Canada and gathers a whole group of his old ape buddies to huddle up in the cold and hurl their verbal feces at Jack over Skype!  In all seriousness, Andrew, Josh, Jackson and Reagan join your intrepid hosts to lovingly air their grievances over the weakest of the Ape sequels.  It's a boisterous conversation about bestial...
