Off The Lead
This podcast is my attempt to push back against what I call 'The Domestication of Our Species'. Over the years I've become increasingly convinced that we [humans] have in recent decades become 'Bred to Consume'. The podcast is called, "Off The Lead" and it's main purpose is to have and spread open and frank conversations with different people from all walks of life. Please feel free to comment [publicly or privately] with thoughts/recommendations etc to imoffthelead@gmail.com Thanks for listening, Frano. Hosted on Acast. 'Midwits' Ss7Ep#40 16.08.2021 12:59
They're are far too many words to mention, but that doesn't mean we don't need any new ones! A new word can be incredibly helpful and 'midwit'(for me at least) is a great word to know because it perfectly encapsulates a particular type of person. And once you've pidgeon holed something it aids in further organising your mind. Now all that's left to do is start filling up my midwit box with people'...
'Apologies' Ss7Ep#39 08.08.2021 15:16
This has been the first time I've been fit enough(mentally) to record anything for a while and is essentially just an expose of why. Shout out to Christine Fitzpatrick of 'Combined Muscle Therapies' for the help! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Use It Or Loose It' Ss7Ep#38 04.08.2021 17:12
This episode ended up highlighting for me what I might spend some time working on when I end the weekday episodes. It's essentially about the importance of implementing what you already know. If you're anything like me you have a thirst for knowledge, which is great, but it becomes counter productive if you're not utilising and indeed capitalising on it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for...
Defining The Circumstances For Success' Ss7Ep#37 03.08.2021 15:20
I kick things off by explaining how going vegetarian during August isn't going far enough but that going vegan is too far and how I've managed to find a worthwhile middle ground. I also end up exploring why creative Irish people often need to 'make it' outside of Ireland before being accepted at home for who and what they are. Hosted on Acast. 'Vegetarianism And Finishing Up The Weekday Solos' Ss7Ep#36 02.08.2021 16:01
I went full carnivor in April and its now time to go full herbivore. I've committed to eating nothing but plants and fungi for the month of August so it will be interesting to see how that pans out. If it's half as beneficial as going meat only it'll be well worth it. I also toy with the idea of finishing up the weekday solos when I've completed season 7. I've mentioned before the idea that being...
'Want To Disect A Brain?' Ss7Ep#35 30.07.2021 13:21
Have you ever wanted to disect a Brain? Now's your chance! This will be done on a first come first served basis so don't leave it on the long finger! Stick your name down as an 'interested party' via 0896047888If nothing else it could be a nice way to meet some like minded people. I also mention how we put up barriers in our own minds that stop us from exploring our interests, this and the social...
'What You Do, Defines You' Ss7Ep#34 29.07.2021 20:31
We have control over who and what we are and what we will become. Should we see fit to, we can recreate ourselves, mentally, emotionally and physically. The choice is yours, stay the same and just get older, or say fuck that and transform yourself into a bigger, better, faster, stronger version of yourself. If you're getting something from my work you might consider supporting me. This can be done...
'The Muscular System' Ss7Ep#33 28.07.2021 18:35
I've done the central nervous system and today it was the muscular systems turn. If you've ever wanted to know what muscle fibers are, the different types of muscles we have, how they work, what they're connected to, what there functions are, what part of the brain controls different muscles and the difference between 'movement muscles' and 'posturing muscles' then this episode is for you! If you'...
'Transgender Weightlifter' Ss7Ep#32 27.07.2021 18:47
This episode is an exploration of my thoughts on Laurel Hubbard (pictured) competing in the women's Olympic weightlifting competition on August 2nd at the 2021 Tokyo Games. I really feel like I need help here so if you have anything to contribute I can be reached via Off The Leads WhatsApp on 0896047888. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Welcome To The Internet' Ss7Ep#31 26.07.2021 9:16
There's a comedy special called "Inside" on Netflix by a stand-up comedian named Bo Burnham. It's Bo and in particular this special that has prompted this episode. It's another 'getting out of my own way' episode, so fair warning! The take home from this episode is that it's embarrassing, it's cringe and somewhat mortifying for me to upload, but, it was the exact same for all the other weird shit...
'Diversity, Discrimination and Thought Crime' Ss7Ep#30 23.07.2021 9:39
"You can't be accused of a thought crime if you think what you're told to think".- The Internet. For the record, I decided to get vaccinated in the end. It was by no means an easy decision to make. However, just because I'm going to be allowed into a restaurant/bar/shop/cinema etc doesn't mean that I'm happy about the fact that people who decided against getting it are going to be discriminated ag...
'Holistic Education' Ss7Ep#29 22.07.2021 17:01
In school we are thought about the component parts of what we are learning. When learning maths we learn addition, then subtraction/multiplication/algebra etc and this form of learning certainly has it's place. But, it's not the be all and end all. This will work well for some and not for others (speaking as an 'other' myself). This episode is my exploration of how I like to teach martial arts, all...
Not All Superheros Wear Capes Ss7Ep#28 21.07.2021 16:08
A lot 'came out of the wash' in this episode. Not least the fact that if I don't make myself do something, it's not getting done. Another, was the idea that what I've been doing (say the last 200 odd episodes or so) has been practice. Making me more articulate and mentally/philosophically sharper. But practice for what exactly? It's not as if I'm ever going to be 'called for'!OH MY GOD, WE NEED SO...
'The Components Of Biology And Logistics' Ss7Ep#27 20.07.2021 19:56
Today I explore the 'fundamental building blocks' of stuff. In physics it's atoms, in biology it's cells and in the 'supply chain' its pallets and shipping containers. However, this begs the question of what are the fundamental constituent parts of politics (a person?), of currency (a pound/dollar/euro?), of fire (a flame) etc etc. Big shout out to those who are supporting me on www.patreon.com/of...
'What I Want To Know About Human Biology' Ss7Ep#26 19.07.2021 29:28
I had said I was going to go down a brain rabbit hole and I have every intention of doing just that. But, it's become apparent that there's no point in learning the inner workings of the brain without first getting to know the basics of our bodies more generally. This episode is an exploration of what I do/don't already know and is an effort to start separating the nice to know from the need to kn...
'Putting Our Government On A Diet' Ss7Ep#25 16.07.2021 24:42
Edit; I said in this episode that RTE hadn't reported on the bill being passed through the Dáil last night. They did. They just didn't say anything about there being large protests outside it! Details, as important as they are, they are often a distraction from the bigger picture. This episode is a reflection on what we can and should do in order to take back some controll of a country that's beco...
'Disecting My Ideology' Ss7Ep#24 15.07.2021 20:57
You'd be forgiven for thinking that I have a good handle on who I am and what I stand for. And maybe I do in comparison to most people. But I certainly don't by my own standards. That is essentially what came out of the wash in this episode. That although I have a relatively high resolution picture of who and what I am, it's poorly conceptualised, it needs work. And the start of that work is to ma...
'Slitting The Throats Of Our Sacred Cows' Ss7Ep#23 14.07.2021 22:55
What does the Brain, Wim Hoff, Skinning Dead Animals, Cage Fighting, Irish Water and The Coast Gaurd have in common? This episode! Today I begin to explore sacred cows/protected interests/things above criticism/status quo/common knowledge/tradition/consensus and getting the fuck out of your own way."Be yourself, everyone else is taken".- Oscar WildeThanks yet again for the support on www.patreon.c...
'Narrative, Censorship And Control' Ss7Ep#22 13.07.2021 17:48
I was caught off gaurd regarding covid, as we all were. We just didn't see it coming and don't generally have a very good understanding of viruses etc. But tech censorship isn't new and it's not exactly getting less prevalent. On the contrary, I'm experiencing it more and more and it's in no small part due to the fact that big tech companies (Google, Facebook, twitter etc) are having an increasing...
'Different Types Of Brains And Cars' Ss7Ep#21 12.07.2021 20:20
Heel hooks, sheep skulls and where blood comes from. This episode has it all! I reference a few images here that you'll find on Off The Leads Instagram page 'Off The Lead Official' so check them out and don't forget to follow the page so you see whatever videos and photos I'm referencing in future. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Neural Pathways' Ss7Ep#20 09.07.2021 15:18
Snowy Hills, GPS tracking and making your way through the woods of our minds - oh my! This episode is an effort to clarify the relevance and importance of habit. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Understanding Our Meat Vehicle' Ss7Ep#19 08.07.2021 17:54
Our lives are dependent on our bodies, and how we treat our bodies dictates the degree to which they operate. Shit in - shit out. This episode along with the previous one seems to be marking the start of my journey to better understanding ourselves on a strictly biological level. If you have an interest or an area of expertise that might be relevant I'm all ears and can be contacted via OTL's What...
'The Brain' Ss7Ep#18 07.07.2021 24:54
Note: Make sure to check out 'offtheleadofficial' on Instagram to see the accompanying photos of the central nervous system. This episode is a welcome break from vaccines and Covid and government etc etc. As outlined at the start it's an exploration of my understanding of 'the brain' and its relationship to 'the mind' and 'the soul'. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Before It's Too Late' Ss7Ep#17 06.07.2021 16:53
Sigh. I'm getting the mrna vacine today and it will be with mixed feelings. One of those feelings however is not, "should I be doing this?". I'm confident (having thought about it over and over) that I'm making the right decision. However, I can't say the same for everybody, as the general consensus seems to be, "I just want things to go back to normal". My advise would be to be very carefull abou...
'Framing' Ss7Ep#16 05.07.2021 21:06
The stories we tell ourselves are shaped/moulded/guided/framed by our lived experience. But our lived experience is about as subjective as it gets and this means that these stories are endlessly malleable. This can cause havoc regarding 'knowing yourself' because if we can endlessly reframe our lives you'd have to ask can there be any objective truth regarding our past? Maybe there isn't, but just...
