Jenn and Joe wrap up Main Feed coverage of Countess Elizabeth Báthory with 2009's The Countess. The romantic drama features big names like writer/director/star Julie Delpy, Daniel Brühl and William Hurt, as well as beautiful costumes, but only a few bloody sequences. Plus: frustrations with Erzsebet's schoolgirl crush, Darvulia the witch, and our wrap-up discussion about a month of Bathory texts!...

Eli Roth’s 2007 sequel may be known as a feminist version of his notorious and groundbreaking film Hostel, but its most memorable scene is pulled from a centuries old true crime story. The cinematic Mrs. Bathory (Monika Malácová) may occupy a single scene, but does the real life inspiration for this bloodthirsty character inform other aspects of Roth’s disturbing story?  Joe and Jenn discuss the h...

Our first Elizabeth Báthory text is the Hammer horror text from 1971 starring Ingrid Pitt as the vain Countess who kills virgins to stay young. It's a great foundational text: it includes several key elements, while also confusing others! Plus: boobs and (a lack of) dick, debate if the film is feminist, and demanding more Ziza. Countess Elizabeth Báthory is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prolific serial killers. She’s said to have murdered more than 650 young women while bathing in the blood of her unfortunate victims. But are these legends based in reality or legends created to vilify a powerful woman? Was the real Elizabeth a bloodthirsty killer, innocent victim or somewhere in between?  Jenn walks Joe thro...

We've reached our last Amityville text as we look at the long-delayed Dimension release, Amityville: The Awakening (shot in 2014; released in 2017) starring Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This one is interesting: it's another DeFeo film, but in this world, the other Amityville films we've discussed exist! Plus: bad disability representation, great monster FX and fit bodi...

Andrew Douglas’s The Amityville Horror is one of the most profitable entries in the early aughts series of classic horror remakes. This stylish haunted house story amps up the gore and updates the story for a modern audience, but is it adapted from Jay Anson’s 1977 novel or is this 2005 version a reimagining of Stuart Rosenberg’s original film?  Wanna connect with the show? Jenn and Joe continue their month of Amityville coverage with the sequel/prequel, Amityville II: The Possession (1982). Tagging along is Joe's Horror Queers co-host Trace Thurman, who has plenty of thoughts about the practical FX, in addition to the film's domestic abuse and incest. Jenn and Joe kick off a month of Amityville texts with the original 1979 film by Stuart Rosenberg, based on the novel by Jay Anson. We talk about how supernatural true crime differs from other forms, the film's status as the grandfather of all haunted house movies, Brolin and Kidder's wardrobe, and the concept of "economic horror."
