JED BREAKS BREAD

I am Pastor Jonathan Edwards. (No, not THAT Jonathan Edwards!). But like the greatest theological mind America has ever produced, I have a desire to know and understand God's Word and how to put it into practice. Many Christians have been accused of having a "dead orthodoxy" - that is, a life that doesn't live out the truths one believes. I want to challenge myself and fellow believers to have an orthopraxy as rich as our orthodoxy, that we might bring glory to God in all areas of life.

Ep. 72 | Speech Transformation for Wives 23.12.2020

Just like husbands, wives need to also work on speech transformation.  This episode covers one of the reasons why speech transformation is critically important for wives, as well as two Biblical commands that will aid wives in speaking in a God-honoring manner.  Remember, whether you think your husband deserves "nice" speech or not, your speech must always be pleasing to Christ first!

Ep. 71 | Speech Transformation for Husbands 17.12.2020

Men, we are leaders in our speech whether we realize it or not (and whether we like it or not!) Our wives and our children are learning from our speech patterns - therefore, we must be diligent to cultivate godly and god-honoring speech habits.  This episode will focus specifically on three areas where you can become more Christlike in your speech with your wives.

Ep. 70 | Speech Transformation, part 1 13.11.2020

Our speech says much about us - and God has much to say about our speech!  A quick survey of the NT reveals that "speech acts" - whether sinful or godly - are a common topic in the Epistles. The NT authors focus on changing our speech, from that which is wicked to that which is righteous.  Today's episode examines Ephesians 4:24-30 and two specific ways that we can be more Christ-like in our speec...

Ep. 69 | Part 1: Communication through Speech 28.10.2020

Key Question: Do you realize that your speech patterns and speech acts are a window to your inner person? Jesus points this out in Matthew 15:15-20 Next question: How humble are you willing to be to transform from sinful speech habits to godly speech habits?

Ep. 68 | part 2 of Communication by Listening 21.10.2020

Continuing the discussion on what makes a good listener and good listening habits.  Deals specifically with how to come to agreement upon subjects that you don't agree.  Answers the question: What if the body language/tone doesn't match the words that are spoken? Should I trust the words or the body language?

Ep. 67 | Communication by Listening 08.10.2020

Can you hear me now? A ubiquitous phrase brought to national consciousness due to clever marketing. But do you ever say that to your spouse and wonder if they're really listening to what you have to say?  I discuss a definition of true listening and then describe various responses to listening, ending with James' admonition to be "quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to become angry". Part 1 of...

Ep. 66 | Biblical Foundations for Communication 23.09.2020

Continuing the discussion on marriage would not be possible without discussing communication between the sexes. We must consider several important Biblical truths in regards to communication. The following questions are answered in this episode: What makes human communication different than the communication that occurs in the animal kingdom?  What are the two main types of communication are we ab...

Ep. 65 | God's Design for Submission in Marriage, Part 2 09.09.2020

In this episode, I examine four more aspects of submission. The challenge in two of these aspects is this: how do you know when you're acting according to your Christian duty vs. acting according the curse given to women (that they would desire to rule their husbands) in Genesis 3:16?  Wives, may you be both encouraged and convicted by these truths. Husbands, may you seek to be a godly leader, mak...

Ep. 64 | God Designed Submission in Marriage 02.09.2020

NOTE: This episode picks up the series on marriage - the previous related episode is Episode 50. If you want the context for this lesson, listen to episodes 49 and 50.    Submission in marriage is one of the most challenging and controversial topics that married couples have to navigate. Our duty as believers is to determine to understand and practice what God says about submission, not what our c...

Ep. 63 | What Hill Will You Die On? 27.08.2020

As a believer, what ideological line will you draw in the sand? What will you NOT do in order to maintain obedience to Jesus Christ? Everyone says that they don't want to compromise truth, but have you thought about what issues of truth those will be?  Please think carefully about how you will defend the Word and honor Christ - we are His servants, above all else!

Ep. 62 | Facing God's Discipline 12.08.2020

When you are suffering under various trials, how do you pray about that? What questions do you ask God?  One overlooked question by many Christians is this: Am I suffering as a result of God's discipline in my life due to personal sin? The answer isn't always "yes," but as a believer you should be at least asking the question! This topic grew out of one of the points in my sermon from August 9, 20...

Ep. 61 | Why I Won't Say "BLM" 05.08.2020

Can I be a Bible-believing Christian and endorse the BLM organization? If you have this question, give this episode a listen and chew on the truths presented.  Primarily focused on examining the statement of beliefs (the statement of faith) of the Black Lives Matter organization in light of Biblical Theology. (Not seeking to make a political statement).

Ep. 59 | What is Social Justice? 12.06.2020

How do secular groups define social justice? I read directly from the Wikipedia entry (current 6/12/2020) and then respond to this definition.  Is Social Justice Biblical Justice? Absolutely not! I explain why using key passages from the OT, including Exodus 23:1-6 and Deut. 16:18.  Also included is a discussion on who is behind the idea/concept of "social justice" and why so many people have boug...

Ep. 58 | I'm Gonna Get What I Deserve 05.06.2020

A popular sentiment right now to justify rioting and looting.  But...if people knew the truth about the consequences of sin, would they still "want what they deserve?"  Listen to the full episode for an explanation and challenge to believers.

Ep. 57 | Why Do I Still Sin? 22.05.2020

In this episode, I provide a bit more of the foundational theology regarding how and why believers still sin from Romans 6.  The teaching in this lesson coordinates with a sermon that I preached for our church, called "Easy/Hard," which can be found at our Facebook and YouTube pages (search for my name and Grace Brethren Chapel). My personal conviction is that understanding the theology behind our...

Ep. 56 | Self-Reflection and the Coronavirus 01.05.2020

As stay-at-home orders begin to expire and life begins to return to "normal", we should each be asking ourselves, "What did I learn from this experience? What was God trying to teach me? How did I handle myself?"  Questions of self reflection are important, for they reveal the true nature of our hearts and the transformation we've experienced through the trial. My hope is that you've grown in Chri...

Ep. 54 | Boasting in Tribulations, Part 1 23.04.2020

How do you respond when God brings tribulations into your life? Sadly, too many of us (Christians) respond with grumbling and complaining. In this episode, I examine Paul's admonition to believers to "boast in tribulations," for such tribulations produce a good result for believers.  You can find the video to this episode on YouTube or FaceBook; search for the Grace Brethren Chapel's page. If you'...

Is the current crisis regarding the Covid-19 pandemic making you angry? I have to admit, it makes me angry.  I share 9 reasons why it makes me angry, along with 4 key truths from the Bible that I'm reminding myself of to help me deal with the anger. Remember, as God's children, He says that if we confess our sin He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteo...

Ep. 51 | God and the Coronavirus 24.03.2020

For many of us, a lot of thoughts run through our minds during times of crisis. It can be hard to stop wondering "What will happen?" and focus on "What should I do right now?"  I present a rundown of some thoughts/ideas that might be going around in our collective minds. Then I offer two truths that ought to ground us in the present: 1) The need to truly rely upon God's sovereign control and 2) Go...

Ep. 50 | God Designed Headship and Submission 04.03.2020

EDIT: The next episode in the series on Marriage is Episode 64! You can skip ahead if you want to continue the teaching on headship and submission.    To practice God's truth means we need to understand God's original intent. Sin has perverted God's design and Satan works overtime to keep us from discerning and knowing it. Today I discuss what God's original intent is regarding male/female interac...
