First Issues NOW!

Every single week, IDW releases a new Godzilla book that I have to praise. Each for different reasons. Man, that'd have been great if one of the characters wasn't absolutely grating on me specifically.  G.O.D.S: One World Under Doom #1, written by Ryan North, art by Francesco Mortarino, colors by Raul Angulo, and letters by VC’s Travis Lanham.

There's certain times when a one-shot would be perfect as a graphic novel, with a little more freedom. I guess that means this is fantastic with an asterisk.  BRING ON THE BAD GUYS: LOKI #1, written by Anthony Oliveira, art by Jethro Morales, colors by Yen Nitro, and letters by VC’s Travis Lanham.

Because it takes JMS to pen the harrowing tale of Peter Parker and MJ having a nice dinner. 10/10.  SPIDER-MAN VS THE SINISTER SIXTEEN #1, written by J. Michael Stracynzski, art by Phil Noto, and letters by VC’s Ariana Maher.

The truth is this proves that literally anything is better than the current ASM run. badum tsh   MARVEL & DISNEY’S WHAT IF… GOOFY BECAME SPIDER-MAN? #1, plot by Steve Behling, script by Riccardo Secchi, art by Francesco D’Ippolito, colors by Lucio Ruvidotti and letters by Laura Tartagalia.

And here I was hoping this would be an only positive week. Sorry.  SAVAGE WOLVERINE #1, written by Tom Bloom, art by Devmalya Pramanik & Guillermo Sanna, colors by Java Tartaglia and letters by VC’s Joe Sabino.

I feel like if I had been reading any part of the High Republic, I would love this. So I think the real verdict is: read High Republic so this amazing book actually means something to me!  STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC - THE FINALE #1, written by Cavan Scott, art by Marika Cresta, colors by Jim Campbell and letters by VC’s Ariana Maher.

Is there anything better than a fun little action-adventure book in the Star Wars universe without any universe-altering stakes? No. No there isn't.  STAR WARS: HYPERSPACE STORIES - TIDES OF TERROR #1, written by George Mann, pencils by Luis Morocho, inks by Le Beau Underwood, colors by Michael Atiyeh, and letters by ComicCraft’s Tyler Smith and Jimmy Betancourt.

I have no idea what I just read, and not in the fun way.  I, TYRANT #1 written by E.E. Zann, art by Godfarr, and letters by Amir Zann.

Well, the last first issue I covered on Werewolf By Night was for THEN AND NOW OF COMICS so it is a breath of fresh air to see new Jack Russell being very true to form. Plus Count Dracula and even Man-Thing! WOOT! I had no idea what to expect but I didn't expect a social media horror complete with eldritch evil and corporate conspiracies... and needing to transition from a fanzine to a podcast. Same, girl.  LOOK INTO MY EYES #1, words and art by Rubine, colors by Francesco Segala, and lettering by El Torres.

A team book about fighting kaiju written by Tim "the Seel Man" Seeley? Sonuvabich, I'm in.  GODZILLA #1, written by Tim Seeley, art by Nikola - I’m going to mess this up - Cizmesija, colors by Franscesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli, with lettering and design by Nathan Widick.

Listen, I'm a simple man. You make a weird west book set in the modern day? I'm there with bells on.  TEXARCANUM #1, written by Christopher Monfette, illustrated by Miguel Martos, colors by Patricio Delpeche, and lettered by Michael Heisler.

I deserve to be smacked for the fact that I always fall off of Vampirella and every time I read her, I need to binge everything about her. Plus she has a cool werewolf friend. VAMPIRELLA: ARMAGEDDON #1, written by Tom Sniegoski, art by Kewber Baal, colors by Omi Remalante Jr. and letters by Jeff Eckleberry.

Is it the superb writing, the fever dream art or just the fact that I love me some bayou stories, but golly gee, that was great.  THE VOICE SAID KILL #1, written by Si Spurrier, art by Vanesa Del Rey, colors by John Starr, and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and a graphic designer with Emma Price.

You know, for a Part 4 to a story I have absolutely no idea what's going on in, it's pretty good! The Shade really needs more attention.  THE FLASH: BAD MOON RISING SPECIAL #1, written by Alex Paknadel, drawn by Daniel Bayliss, colors by Matt Herms, and letters by Buddy Beaudoin. 

It's often that you can see manga influence comics, but its REALLY rare to see a comic rise above both styles... at least rare to see it done well. THIS IS AWESOME!  GHOST PEPPER #1, written, drawn, and lettered by creator Ludo Lullabi, but Adriano Lucas did the colors.

Sometimes it really is as simple as smashing action figures together with some fun lines to make me squee like the fanboy I am.  GODZILLA DESTROYS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #1, written by Gerry Duggan, art by Javier Garron, colors by Jesus Aburtov and Andrew Dalhouse, with letters by VC’s Travis Lanham. 

Hey kids, do you want to see a really good pastiche of a popular noir movie set in a high fantasy world? Well you should! It's great!  RED SONJA NOIR #1, written by David Avallone, art by Edu Menna, colors by Adriano Augusto, with letters by Jeff Eckleberry.
