As You Know

Happy Halloween! Join the Midnight Society for two chilling tales from the YTV/Nick classic Are You Afraid of the Dark…if you dare

We are entering vampire world once again as our resident sicko Matt takes us on a deep dive through CW series lore with The Originals. How does the Vampire Diaries spinoff compare to The Vampire Diaries, a show that only Matt watches? Is this just an amalgamation of True Blood, Twilight and Interview with the Vampire but without the charm? What are these accents?

Ian cashes his check by making us watch the preposterously acclaimed and influential anime Neon Genesis Evangelion (with the film substituting for the original finale). Can he and Stephen convert anime skeptic Travis and animation-averse Matt to the cult of Anno? Better yet, can they explain what the hell is going on?

We turn the channel to the A&E Network for the first (and probably last time) to discuss the most arrogant show we've covered: Bates Motel, a not-exactly-prequel to one of the most important films ever made. Travis and Stephen also reveal personal things about themselves.

The pod assumes power trio form to talk about one of the biggest hits of the 2000s, Desperate Housewives. The show raises such important questions as "should you own a gun?" and "are onion allergies even real?"

Special guest Luke "Fluke" Dahlgren helps us infiltrate the Deep State as we discuss the cult favorite spy comedy-drama Chuck. We get into the show's place in a very specific historical period, Zachary Levi's weird Christianity, the ubiquity of Cobrastyle in the mid-2000s, and much more.

We are now entering Shondaland and frankly would rather talk about college football, but we are forcing ourselves to discuss the terrible Grey's Anatomy spinoff Private Practice. Stephen has determined TV is bad.

Special guest Ally, aka Bleepy for long time listeners, joins us to discuss the beloved UK teen dramedy Skins. At least, the first episode is a beloved teen dreamed. The last one is part two of a terrible crime story. Lots of anti-British jokes ahead.

Ipsa dis! It's time for legendary cop procedural NYPD Blue, the edgiest show on network television of its era. We were blown away by its pilot, and blown away by how much worse the finale is. Many Chicago accents await you.

Matt's punishment pick for the week is the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva, which somehow lasted six seasons and has mostly inspired us to talk about Cartesian Dualism and the mind-body problem, cryptids, and legal mumbo jumbo. Learn about cable's most existentially terrifying series here!

This week we're heading to classic WB with Keri Russell's starmaking turn in Felicity, the show that introduced JJ Abrams as a television auteur. It's a classic example of young adult drama, focused on a normal college girl who also abruptly learns how to travel through time in the final five episodes.

We dip back into the Showtime well for hopefully the last time for a while with the hit comedy-drama Weeds. Does the show have much to offer beyond its basic “MILF sells drugs” premise? Does Rilo Kiley hold up today? Was Kevin Nealon ever actually funny? Why does every Showtime show feel like this????

IT'S MORPHIN' TIME! We finally do an episode on the absolute television and merchandise phenomenon that was the OG Power Rangers. Learn a lot about Travis's childhood, Haim Saban, Buckethead, non-union acting jobs and more on this pod.

We're turning the clock all the way back to 1966 for our first ever soap opera, the cult gothic series Dark Shadows. We talk bizarre episode numbering, revivals, movie adaptations, flubbed lines, the moon landing, the Gulf War, and of course Metal Gear.

It's time to talk about Gotham, the crime drama that's definitely not about Batman and definitely doesn't have The Joker in it. Stephen does possibly the worst Eminem impression of all time in this ep.

We are joined by special guest An Irish Person to discuss legendary Irish-British sitcom Father Ted, co-created by legendary asshole (or arsehole) Graham Linehan. We talk about the impact of the beloved series and find out if Glinner was actually funny before he devoted his life to freaking out about trans people online.

We take a trip north of the border to discuss Canada's most enduring domestic product: Degrassi. Specifically, the 2001-2015 version, The Next Generation. We dive into Degrassi's long and strange history, Canadian pop culture's slight wrongness, and Scott Thompson's extremely ill-fated early 2000s career.

Our first foray into the FX network brings us Denis Leary's firefighter dramedy Rescue Me, the most Boston show ever set in New York. Is there a good series buried underneath the rubble (and gratuitous ethnic slurs)? Is Denis Leary, and by extension Bill Hicks, still funny in 2021? Find out here.

Join Carrie (Ian), Charlotte (Travis), Miranda (Matt) and Samantha (Stephen) on their journey through the massively popular HBO comedy Sex and the City, which for some reason had Mikhail Baryshnikov as a love interest by the end.

For the first time we're taking on one of the Most Important Shows Of The Century. The Rick and Morty of its day, The Wire. Can Stephen and Matt be convinced to enjoy one of Travis and Ian's favorites? How many guys can we remember? All the pieces matter on As You Know.

We are joined by a very special guest to discuss Showtime's hit series Dexter. We will not let the upcoming reboot get in the way of talking about the show's infamously awful finale, but we also posit that this show maybe wasn't very good in the first place.

Matt's quest to learn about a very particular type of TV show has led us to the CW's Hart of Dixie, starring Rachel Bilson and our FNL favs Scott Porter and Cress Williams. Is it good? No. Do we like it anyway? Not really. What the hell even is it? Listen to find out.

We cover our first classic, multi-cam sitcom in this episode with none other than the Emmy record-breaking spinoff Frasier. In a first for As You Know, we all liked it. Listen to find out who among us is a Frasier, who's a Niles, and who's a Daphne Moon.

Come join us beyond the rim as we discuss the influential (but really boring) space opera Babylon 5. With its test pilot film and a finale that was made before the last season began, this show has one of the weirdest arcs we've covered. It also has characters with multiple four-foot long prehensile dicks.
